Lorelei and Erl King, Belshazzar and Sorcerer's Apprentice: these are magical powers, ghosts and nightmares that haunt the people in these songs, leaving them spiritually shattered or even dead. What captivates us is this pleasant shudder, this pleasure in horror, which lets the romanticism pour on us through the wide open gates of the unknown. Stubborn witches' brooms, a maid with a wooden leg, ominous writings on the wall prove to us: we actually have nothing in our hands. Members of our ensemble sing songs by Schumann, Liszt and Brahms, among others, to texts by Goethe, Heine and Mallarmé.
